Paper Filters
Paper filters are manufactured by the random deposition of cellulose fibers in slurry, onto the screen of a papermaking machine. The type, size and density of the fibers and the level of compaction and thickness of the mat determine the grade of the filter. Depending on the application, the paper is futher treated to enhance specific characteristics of strength, hardness and chemical resistance or is acid washed to reduce impurities and the ash content of filters used in gravimetric analysis.

Qualitative Filters are used for general laboratory applications which identify or separate precipitates or other particulate matter from a mixture.

QL1 Retention 15 - 25 µm. Very fast flow rate, general purpose filter. Suitable for gas filtration, air pollution analysis, retention of large crystalline particles and gelatinous precipitates such as ferric and aluminium hydroxide. Also useful for cleanup of biological fluids and organic extracts.

QL2 Retention 8 - 12 µm. Fast flow rate, general purpose filter. Frequently used for clarifying fluids. Also suitable for pollution analysis and retention of medium crystalline particulates such as lead sulfate, calcium carbonate and hot calcium oxalate.

QL232 Retention 5 -10 µm. Medium to slow flow rate, general purpose filter. Suitable as a media to hold soil nutrients in plant growth studies.

QL131 Retention 3 - 6 µm. Slow flow rate, general purpose filter. High retention of fine particles and crystalline precipitates such as barium sulfate. Suitable for clarifying cloudy suspensions and boiler water analysis.

Quantitative Filters are acid washed and are suitable for gravimetric and other critical analysis where background contamination is undesirable.

QN 5A Retention 15 - 25 µm. Fast flow rate, general purpose filter. This is a double acid washed paper suitable for the retention of coarse particles and gelatinous precipitates. Recommended for filtering hydroxides and metallic aerosols and determining silica content in steels. Also used in quantitative air pollution analysis and foodstuffs analysis.

QN 5B Retention 5 - 10 µm. Medium flow rate, general purpose filter. This product has been subjected to a double acid wash in HCI and has good chemical resistance and wet strength. Suitable for quantitative analysis of soils fertilizers, cement and minerals. Also used in the collection of trace elements and radionucleotides from the atmosphere.

QN 5C Retention 2 - 5 µm. Slow flow rate. High retention filter for critical gravimetric analysis and separation of precipitates that tend towards colloidal dispersion.
QN 7 Retention 2 - 10 µm. Medium flow rate. This is the highest purity quantitative paper available. Suitable for analyses of minute trace and precious metals and for research laboratories where precision is a high priority.

QN 4A Retention 2 - 3 µm. Very slow flow rate. This acid washed paper is futher treated with nitric acid to harden the paper for superior wet strength and eliminate shedding of fibers. It has excellent pH and chemical resistance. Suitable for retaining fine crystalline particulate and use under pressure.

Special Purpose
Pre-Pleated Paper Filters
are offered in two disc diameters. Retention rating of 3 to 10 microns.
Sugar Paper Filters are used to clarify sugar solutions prior to examination by polarmetric methods to determine the sucrose content. It can also be used for many other applications requiring a fast flow rate.
Phase Separating Filters are used to separate aqueous from non aqueous phases. Retention rating of 5 to 10 microns.

Glass Fiber and Quartz Filters
The method of manufacture of Glass and Quartz fiber filters is very similar to that of paper filters. Retention efficiency is however, superior to that of paper. Unlike cellulose fibers that swell when wetted, glass fiber filters maintain their dimensional stability and provide a superior chemical resistance and dirt holding capacity as well as biological inertness. Binder free borosilicate glass fiber filters are heat resistant to about 500 ° C. For temperatures up to 1000 ° C the Quartz (SiO2) microfiber filters are typically used.

Grades of Glass Fiber FiIters

G/A55 Retention 1.6 µm . General purpose glass fiber filter recommended for air & water pollution monitoring, filtration of protein, bacteria cultures, etc. Recommended for radioimmunoassays of weak beta emitters and for food analyses.

G/B140 Retention 1.0 µm . Thick filter offering high wet strength and dirt holding capacity. Good as membrane prefilter, and for industrial waste analyses.

G/C50 Retention 1.2 µm . Recommended for suspended solids analysis of water and wastewater Low absorption make this filter ideal for scintillation counting

G/F75 Retention 0.7 µm . Often used to collect IgC or other very fine protein precipitates or for clarifying chemically aggressive solutions. Also suitable for analysis of chlorophyll “a”.

Q/R100 Retention 1.5 µm . This high purity Quartz (Si02) microfiber filter is specially prefiired at 900° C for two hours to reduce organic contamination. Recommended for sampling acidic gases at temperatures exceeding 500° C. Also suitable for carbon detection in aqueous studies.

Membrane Filters
Membrane filters feature precise pore sizes for exact filtration and screening. The following are some of the types of filters offered by AMD.
Cellulose Nitrate/MCE. Water extractables are less than 2.5% (wt.) and temperature tolerance up to 127°C. Nitrocellulose membranes and Mixed Cellulose Esters (MCE) are ideal for filtration of aqueous solutions, analytical research and microbiological analyses. The filters are suitable for hybridization studies, immunoassays and cell based assays. The high porosity (80%) makes this the filter of choice where maximum throughput is required.
Cellulose Acetate. Water extractables are less than 0.1 % (wt.) and the temperature tolerance up to 180° C. The intrinsic low binding properties of this filter make it superior where protein loss of the sample is to be minimized. The improved chemical compatibility of this product over cellulose nitrate enable it to be used for filtration of low molecular weight alcohols as well as clarification and sterilization of aquous fluids, alcohols, tissue culture media, protein samples, filtration of radio tracer solutions, opthalmics etc.
Nylon. Water extractables are less than O.3% (wt.) & temperature tolerance up to 180 ° C. Nylon filters display high protein binding properties. Its excellent chemical compatibility with common solvents, bases and esters make it an ideal choice for use in the HPLC laboratory.
PTFE (Polytetrafluorethylene). The hydrophobic nature of teflon and its broad chemical compatibility make it the filter of choice for filtration of air and gases, for use as vents and for clarification of acids, bases and solvents. The teflon membrane needs to be prewet with alcohol before aqueous solutions can be filtered. To overcome problems with handling the teflon membrane is laminated to a polypropylene web support. This lamination process restricts the temperature tolerance of the teflon to that of polypropylene (130°C .)
Silver. The unique chemical and thermal stability make this membrane especially valuable for those applications involving filtration of aggressive fluids and/or use at high temperatures up to 550°C. They are ideal collection media for analysis of crystalline silica by X-Ray diffraction or analysis of organic materials. Silver membrane can be cleaned and reused.
Polycarbonate. Polycarbonate membrane filters are a two dimensional submicron microporous seive consisting of a precisely controlled cylindrical pore structure. The unique characteristics of the filter make it ideally suited in applications where discrete separation or fractionation of particles, or surface capture on a single plane for subsequent microscopic examination is desired. The membrane has negligible water extractables and low non specific binding characteristics. It has good chemical resistance and thermal stability (140° C.) Its resistance to staining make it ideal for use in cytology. Polycarbonate filters have a relatively low porosity, as a result its dirt holding capacity and throughput is limited.
Filters for Diagnostic Cytology. The use of filters as an aid in Cytodiagnosis has been well documented and accepted. A.M.D. Manufacturing provides both the polycarbonate and cellulose acetate membrane filters to satisfy the critical demands of most users.
